Music Through the Ages

John Dady
John Dady works with a young audience at School 19.

Professional musicians work with city students through Music Through the Ages, a musical mentoring and community arts program serving Rochester City School District students at Charles Lunsford School #19.

The program was established to carry on the legacy of Rochester musician and teacher Dennis Monroe, by providing access to the arts for under-served students in the Rochester City School District.

The musicians of Music Through the Ages have provided an ongoing program of musical performances, classes and workshops at School #19 since 2009. Musicians are paid a modest honorarium for their appearances through the program. The program, administered by REF, is supported by voluntary donations from the community and from a recently-received grant from the Rothenberg Family Foundation.

From Performance to Songwriting and More

Kids are enthralled
Students at School #19 are enthralled by these performances.

The impressive list of performers committed to the program includes John and Joe Dady, Nate Rawls, Steve Piper, Shirlyn Washington and Allen Hopkins. Music Through the Ages has sponsored community musical events to raise support and awareness of the program, including fundraising concerts, such as Winter Tunes in January, 2012 and February, 2013. Click here to see the poster for the Winter Tunes concert slated for February 10, 2013.

Music Through the Ages is committed to an ongoing partnership with School #19, so that the school community can establish and maintain stable relationships with artists in an era when public funding of the arts and arts education is increasingly uncertain.
