Recipe for Success
Recipe for Success, 2008-2009, was a community effort to promote literacy, healthy eating, and food-related careers through cooking activities. The program focused on third, seventh, and ninth graders in the Rochester City School District.
An outgrowth of Rochester Education Foundation's successful and continuing Give Back, Give Books program, through which new books are donated to city school students and city school libraries, Recipe for Success continued the mission of Give Back, Give Books by offering cookbooks to students.
Recipe for Success encouraged healthy living by distributing a healthy eating cookbook and helping teachers and volunteers share the fundamentals of healthy eating and food preparation. A curriculum for third-grade classrooms entitled Healthy Cooking, Eating and Literacy was developed by Jo Wilson, a consultant and retired RCSD teacher. That curriculum is still available on the Curriculum Materials page in the Resources section of our website.
Cookbooks and examples of healthy eating activities for students are still available by contacting REF at firstname.lastname@example.org.
